The subject matter of my paintings – nature – may seem irrelevant these days. In the urbanized, technologically obsessed society that we live in people seem to have lost the connection to the natural environment and the ability to appreciate it. I seek to represent the splendor of nature that I see in its simplest forms, richness of color, shimmering of light, variety of texture. I hope for the viewer to pause and be able to notice the beauty of a simple rock or a blade of grass that I perceive. My paintings are fragments of real landscapes that I come across in my life. However, they are always simplified - stripped down to the basics – fields of colors, rhythm of elements and contrast of light and shadow. What interests me is conveying the essence of the place that got imbedded in my mind and not the particularities of the specific location. I hope for my paintings to trigger in the viewer memories of their own life experiences. I work by applying paint in multiple layers - building one upon another and sometimes scraping them off to reveal what is hidden underneath. I apply paint in a variety of ways – sometimes building heavily textured surface with a knife, sometimes diluting the paint to make it flow in a free uncontrolled way. I never fully know what the final result is going to be – I allow for chance to happen, let myself be guided by each new marking on the canvas. |
